WHAT IS A MOVEMENT?
Watch movements are also called “caliber”. Movement is the engine of the watch. Movement is something like heart and brain all together which perform all operations in the watch. Movement is the core without its outer design-shell. The mechanism powers any added functionality to watch such as chronograph, an annual calendar, dual times, stopwatch, moon state functions, and others. Movement is responsible for accurate timekeeping functions on which other functions (mentioned before) depends.
There is a lot of different variations Speaking of movement types. Manufacturers try to reinvent those mechanisms. They add some new and even unseen functions to watches. Or try to make inner mechanism a little different. For example, they try to reduce movement sizes so they would take up less space what sometimes leads to smaller watches. Those smaller watches considered to be more delectable and in that way they gain new-look = new designs.
However, all variations of mechanism can be divided into two main categories.
Quartz movement (most common)
WHAT IS QUARTZ WATCH?
Quartz watches are considered to bet the newest type of movement that was invented in 1969, Seiko, Japan.
One of the biggest differences between quartz watches and other (mechanical and automatic) watches is that the mechanism requires a battery. Batteries send an electrical signal to and through a piece of quartz crystal. Then quartz crystal vibrates 32768 times per second and creates a precise frequency. Those vibrations are converted into pulses that represent seconds. Continuous pulsation coming from the conversation of crystal vibrations makes watch hands move at certain distances. Those distances on wristwatches are marked as seconds-minutes-ours strips.
Pros of quartz movement
Time accuracy – It not only known for its use of quartz technology. They also are popular because of ensuring superior accuracy
Cheaper – Quartz watches have fewer parts what makes them easier to maintain and better in terms of watchmaking. But that does not mean that watches itself always going to be cheaper. There are other things that make watches luxurious besides quality movement inside them.
Durability – Quartz watch has less moving parts than automatic and mechanical movements. That makes the movement easier to repair.
WHAT IS MECHANICAL WATCH?
Mechanical watches appeared in Europe in the 17th century from spring-powered clocks (15th century)
Nowadays, mechanical movements are often considered to be more luxurious due to their high level of quality and craftsmanship. Mechanical watches are not as easy to build as quartz. The movement has more parts that make it longer and harder to craft by experienced watchmakers.
Mechanical watches do not need batteries to operate. The main watches powering energy comes from a wound spring. Spiral stores energy and transfers that energy to spin all gears and springs in movement.
There are two different mechanical movements (subcategories)
1. Manual movement
2. Mechanical movement
WHAT IS MANUAL WATCH?
Manual watches are the oldest ones. Those watches called manual because you have to transfer energy by hand wounding to power up and store that energy in movements wound spring. Manual-wind watches are also charming for their beautiful mechanism that you can observe trough clear watch case-back.
If you want to power up your watch you must turn the crown multiple times clockwise and backward a few times to wind the mainspring and store your transferred energy into movement. Stored energy then is used little by little to power the watch mechanism.
However, there are winding intervals. The winding intervals depend on the power capacity of movement. Some movements wound springs are capable to hold power from 24 hours to five days or even more. There are a lot of manual watch lovers who like to wind up their watches repeating it as some ritual.
WHAT IS A AUTOMATIC WATCH?
An automatic watch is in some ways similar to the manual. Automatic watches do not require you to turn the crown every time to power up spring. This type of movement often referred to as “self-winding”. If you wear those watches regularly they will maintain functioning without winding. But if you do not wear them regularly there is an additional function to power them up in the same way as manual movements.
Automatic watches movements work almost the same as a manual but what it has, in addition, is metal weight called a rotor. The rotor is connected to movement and can rotate freely with each movement of the wrist
There are 2 categories of movements with subcategories. They all are charming in their own ways.
If you are tired of battery-powered technologies you should try mechanical watch to feel sensations of history.
